Texas Civil and Environmental Engineering Firm Offers College Scholarship For 11th Year to Austin, Buda and Gonzales High Schools

Southwest Engineers scholarship application deadline is April 15, 2017 

AUSTIN, Texas – March 24, 2017– Southwest Engineers Inc., a full-service civil and environmental engineering consulting firm, today announced the application deadline for the Southwest Engineers scholarship program is April 15, 2017.  In its tenth year, the program has awarded more than $45,000 in scholarship funds to aspiring civil and/or environmental engineering students.

“The Southwest Engineers scholarship program is just one of the ways we give back to the community to assist students who have higher education goals in our field of study,” said John Littlefield, owner and president of Southwest Engineers. “Our goal is to recognize graduating high school students for their efforts in achieving academic excellence and accomplishing balance with involvement in extra-curricular activities.”

The national job outlook from 2014-2024 for civil engineers is expected to be average with growth of eight percent and the addition of 34,600 jobs, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Environmental engineering job growth is more robust with a 12 percent growth rate and the addition of 6,800 jobs in the same time period. Texas is second for the highest employment levels of civil engineers by state with 25,370 and fifth for environmental engineers with 2,840 employed as of May 2015.

The 2017 Scholarship program will grant up to $5,000 to one graduating high school senior per scholarship area in the Austin area and Gonzales area reaching an estimated 16 high schools. Participating schools in the Austin/Buda area include Akins High School, David Crockett High School, James Bowie High School, Hays High School, Lehman High School and William B. Travis High School.

Participating schools in the Gonzales area include Gonzales High School, Hallettsville High School, Hallettsville Sacred Heart, Luling High School, Moulton High School, Nixon-Smiley High School, Shiner High School, Shiner St. Paul, Waelder High School and Yoakum High School.
