Powell Hinson Receives $5,000 Scholarship from Southwest Engineers Inc.

AUSTIN, TEXAS – July 21, 2015 – Southwest Engineers Inc., a full-service civil and environmental engineering consulting firm, today announced it awarded a 2015 Texas Civil and Environmental Engineering Scholarship to Bowie High School student, Powell Hinson. A community-minded athlete and scholastic leader, Powell plans to attend the University of Colorado Boulder to pursue a degree in Environmental Engineering.

Hinson, a recipient of the University of Colorado Boulder Chancellor’s Achievement Scholarship College of Engineering, also received a National Honor Society Bowie Trustee Award in 2012. He has held a position on the National Honor Society and consistently achieved the AB honor roll at Bowie High School throughout high school. In addition, Hinson served on the Spanish Honor Society in 2013.

Hinson is an accomplished athlete and was named a Kent Ewing Scholar Athlete and First Team Academic All-District for Men’s Varsity Basketball in 2013, 2014 and 2015. As the Bowie Varsity Men’s Basketball Team Captain for 2014-2015, Hinson participated in Bowie Varsity Men’s Basketball, notably lettering for the last three years. Hinson also participated on the Bowie Freshman football team and the Bowie Track team in the High Jump category.

Hinson was elected Bowie High School Class of 2015 Student Council President and has been active in the Peer Assistance & Leadership (PALS) program. Hinson has devoted numerous hours volunteering with Bowie Buddies, at a Clint Small Basketball Camp, as a Bowie High School Camp Counselor and with the Bowie High School Spanish/National Honor Society. While excelling in academics, community and sports leadership, Hinson successfully includes working nearly 500 hours at the Oak Hill Golf Range in the Maintenance department.

Hinson’s passion for the environment began after a camping expedition through Yellowstone and Glacier National Parks prompting his attendance at City Council meetings and leading to his interest in local water restrictions. Hinson’s research about hydrology has fueled a regard for water conservation, regeneration and desalinization. He commented, “There are millions of people worldwide, including the United States, who struggle to find drinkable water. With 97.3% of Earth’s water in oceans, no one on the globe should be without safe, clean water. I want to develop more cost efficient and reliable methods to desalinize water to ensure people everywhere will have access to drinkable water.”

“The Southwest Engineers scholarship program was created to support exceptional candidates who are pursuing a career in civil or environmental engineering, because we believe small towns and rural communities of Texas will be impacted by these future leaders,” said John Littlefield, president of Southwest Engineers. “We wish Mr. Hinson much success in his collegiate endeavors and congratulate his community, atheltic and scholastic achievements.”

In its ninth year, the Southwest Engineering Scholarship Program has awarded more than $30,000 in scholarship funds to aspiring civil and/or environmental engineering Texas students.
